We have over 100 teen girls, boys, and mothers in our monthly mentorship program, and most of these people have either experienced domestic and gender-based violence, or are going through it at the moment. I have felt the need to write briefly about it as a mean of not only creating awareness, but also as a call to action.
What is domestic violence, why is it dangerous and how can we stop it?
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used by one person in a relationship to gain power and control over the other person. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse.
Domestic violence is dangerous because it can lead to serious physical and emotional harm, and in some cases, death.
Domestic violence affects not only the victims but also their families, friends and communities. It destroys the fabric of relationships and can lead to other problems like poverty, mental health issues, substance abuse and even homelessness.
Everyone should be involved in stopping domestic violence because it is a widespread problem that affects individuals and communities of all backgrounds.
By speaking out against domestic violence and supporting victims and survivors, we can create a culture that does not tolerate abuse and helps to prevent it.
It is important to educate ourselves on the signs of domestic violence, and to know how to respond when someone we know is experiencing it.
We can also help by supporting organizations that help victims and survivors of domestic violence, and by advocating for policies and programs that address the root causes of abuse, we can make a real difference in the lives of those affected by domestic violence and ultimately help to end it.
A lot goes on in our communities and neighborhood and I think it is high time we all took concern and spoke against such abuse and mistreatment. Whether men are the perpetuators of these "crimes" against women and children, or they are the victims, domestic and gender-based violence, of all sorts must stop. You can help too.
